Thorne http://www.blognetworknews.com/2007/shiny-media-gets-new-money/ Shiny Media, managed by Ashley Norris and Chris Price, recently secured $4.5 million in venture capital from Bright Station Ventures. (Congratulations)

Wagner’s first move at Bright Station Ventures was to take 50% of the 22-strong UK-based blog network, which claims 3m readers each month. It is good news for Shiny and also a healthy development for the European blog sector.

The news was revealed in yesterday’s Sunday Times, which has long been a Wagner-watcher. He famously bought the Boo platform for about a quarter of a million quid, to underpin Venda, an online retail ASP that is going from strength to strength.

On February 1, 2007, they announced that they would be welcoming a brand new gadget blog, Gadgetizer.com, into their blog network family.

Gadgetizer is a technology blog penned by Tiago Gaspar (who will remain the editor of the blog) and previously owned by Paul Short of Gomaud Media. Details of the acquisition are still sketchy, so we’ll just have to see if any other news develops…like how much it went for. Hint hint.

One interesting surprise is that advertisers can actually get the ads in a podcast instead of just on the website itself. This seems to me that podcasts may go the way of radio with interim adverts between the actual music (or in this case, dialog).

First, Duncan Riley leaves b5media, now Jason Calanis (of Weblogs, Inc. fame) is leaving AOL. The story was first broken at TechCrunch and then picked up by the New York Times.

The news comes after Jason learned CEO, Jonathan Miller, is being replaced with Randy Falco.

In recent months, Mr. Calacanis said he was considering leaving AOL to start a new company. His decision to resign was hastened by the news that Time Warner, AOL’s parent, had replaced Mr. Miller with Randy Falco, the president of the NBC Universal Television Group.

“I’m not inclined to start over with a new guy,” Mr. Calacanis said in an interview on Thursday. As for what to make of the treatment of Mr. Miller, who discovered he was being replaced after a reporter called AOL asking about Mr. Falco’s appointment, Mr. Calacanis said only: “I’m perplexed. Why now?”

What does this mean for AOL? Jason was an integral part of their company, and now they’ll need to find someone big enough to fill his shoes.

The last few weeks have been very exciting for b5media, but we are sad to announce that effective immediately Duncan Riley is leaving b5.

Speculation that the departure wasn’t amicable was already brought up in the very first comment on the post, in which, the commenter mentioned a blog entry by Duncan stating that he was stabbed in the back.

But time to go now, the wounds in my back are twitching and I’ll[sic] got to go and sign some papers.

Reading between the lines, methinks there’s more than meets the eye with this change at b5.

b5media Inc. (“b5media”), a global new media network, has raised US$2-million of equity financing in a transaction co-lead by Brightspark Ventures and J. L. Albright Venture Partners. The funding will strengthen the company’s network of bloggers to create greater value for readers and advertisers.

Though there are a few dissenting views about this new turn of events, I wish them the best of luck.
